- The regiment was first raised in 1685 as the Duke of Shrewsbury's Regiment of Horse.
- In 1751 it was renamed as 2nd Regiment of Horse
- It was renamed again in 1788 as the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards.
- In 1804 the unit was renamed once more as the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Dragoon Guards.
Overall the unit saw service for two centuries, including the First World War, before being amalgamated with The Inniskillings (6th Dragoons), to form the 5th/6th Dragoons in 1922.
