Main Category for the Easter Rising
The Easter Rising of 1916 in Dublin, Ireland opened with The Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Forógra na Poblachta. This was a document prepared by the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army, and read on the 24th April 1916 from the steps of the General Post Office, by Patrick Pearse.
Members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood occupied the Post Office and other strategic places in Dublin during the uprising, defending them against the British Army until forced to surrender six days later.
Leaders of the rebellion were executed, most shot by the British army in Kilmainam Jail, Dublin.
The execution of these rebels helped to consolidate Irish opinion toward support for renewed efforts to establish an independent Republic of Ireland. This was achieved partially with the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922, and finally with the declaration of the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
