Renaming and Deleting Categories

There are 3 templates for deleting and renaming categories.

Delete a category

{{Delete Category}}

If you want to delete the category you can add {{Delete Category}} on the category page. It is good to write a reason for deletion in the next line. It will help categorization members determine what to do if further action is needed. If the category is empty and no other page links to the category, it will be automatically deleted. Otherwise it will be reviewed by Categorization project. If category is not empty, and profiles should be moved to another category, use Merge Category.

Template details: Template:Delete_Category.

Template has also one optional parameter. This parameter is not to be used by unauthorized users.

Additional notes:

  • For empty categories there is a difference between both templates. If you use rename category, translation will be remembered and will also move the pages in the future.
  • All categories are checked on each run of the bot and if it is in the wrong category (No links to the category), it is processed as if it had no parameter.

Merge a category

{{Merge Category|FinalCategoryName}}

Moves all members and merges the category content (whatever text is on the category page) to the final one and delete it. Destination category must exist.

If you want to merge two categories you can add {{Merge Category|FinalCategoryName}} on the one you want deleted. It is good to write a reason for the merge in the next line. It will help categorization members determine what to do if further action is needed. If it has less than 10 members and links to it, then EditBot will move the members and content of the category to final category and delete the old one. Otherwise it will be reviewed by Categorization project. If the category is empty, you can use also Delete Category.

Template details: Template:Merge_Category.

Template has one parameter for new name of the category and a second optional parameter that is not to be used by unauthorized users.

Additional notes:

  • For empty categories there is a difference between Delete and Merge templates. If you use merge category, translation will be remembered and will also correct category usage in the future.
  • All categories are checked on each run of the bot and if it is in the wrong category (Number of links under 10), it is processed as if it had no parameter.

Rename a category

{{Rename Category|NewCategoryName}}

Moves all members to the final one and deletes it. Destination category must exist. Category description (wiki code) from old category won't be copied to the new one.

If you want to rename the category you can add {{Rename Category|NewCategoryName}} on it. It is good to write a reason for rename in the next line. It will help categorization members determine what to do if further action is needed. If it has less than 10 members or links to it, then EditBot will move the members to the final category and delete the old one. Otherwise it will be reviewed by Categorization project. If the category is empty, you can use also Delete Category.

Template details: Template:Rename_Category.

Template has also one parameter for new name of the category and a second optional parameter that is not to be used by unauthorized users.

Additional notes:

  • For empty categories there is a difference between Delete and Merge templates. If you use rename category, translation will be remembered and will also correct category usage in the future.
  • All categories are checked on each run of the bot and if it is in the wrong category (Number of links under 10), it is processed as if it had no parameter.

Instructions for Confirming EditBOT

EditBOT does some actions automatically. Those are Delete empty categories and Rename / Merge have limit set at 10 profiles to be changed. Others have to be confirmed by a group, looking over the renames. If other users are confirming, it has no effect. Category has to be saved by a group member. At the moment Durbin-702|Harris-5439| are on the list. Members of the group should read complete EditBOT instructions including the parts on template pages.

  • Category merges and renames, that would change more than 10 profiles, must be confirmed by one of a few categorization project volunteers, who offered to do it. If it has more than 100 profiles, It has to be confirmed by me. That means category will be corrected on the profiles.
  • Category deletion that would change any profile, must also be confirmed. If there are more than 10 changes, I also have to confirm it. That means category will be deleted from profiles.

Bot is run usually once a day or more if I see the need.

Confirmation can be done in 2 ways.

The confirmation itself is done by changing {{Rename Category|United States Farmers|Review}} to {{Rename Category|United States Farmers|Confirmed}}

Before confirming, you have to look over what is happening. If it's something obvious like a typo or a misspelling, it's a no-brainer. But, sometimes the renames take some research or involve an email exchange with the person who is deleting or renaming and/or the project (if it's project associated.)

Once everything is confirmed that this is really what is wanted/needed, I add a pipe and "Confirmed" after the deletion or renaming part of the template. So {{Delete Category|Confirmed}}

If renaming or merging, the new category must already exist. When they are not set up, I copy the text of the old category, or at least copy over any parent categories so that there is not an extra error created. If there is no parent given, you will have to figure out what to put. If you go through the process and don't have a parent category assigned, EditBot will just kick it back again.

You can also check Category:Manual_Cleanup. There is several reasons for manual actions.

  • Often destination category is missing. Create it and move the content to the new page.
  • Page that should be corrected, contains unknown or special UTF characters, that EditBOT doesn't understand and would delete them if doing the change.
  • The category reference was not found on the page, so nothing was corrected. This is usually due to templates. They can assign the category by some name calculation. I programmed EditBOT to understand this calculations on some templates, but not all. In such cases, maybe template must be corrected, or template parameter. If there are a lot of profiles to correct, contact me and I might extend the BOT to correct them automatically.
  • For Deleted categories, links to them are never deleted automatically, since they usually form a sentence and the sentence would look stupid without the link. That is the reason they have to be removed manually, usually with the whole sentence or section. This includes free space pages and text in person profiles and any other page type. Always check the "what links here" link to discover where the category must be removed.

Once those errors/profiles/links are cleared, EditBOT will complete the operation.
