Its churches are grouped into dioceses which are then grouped into provinces. It has dioceses and churches in the U.S., Taiwan, Micronesia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, as well as the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe and the Navajoland Area Mission.
By history and doctrine, it developed out of the Church of England, but separated from the Church of England as a result of the Revolutionary War and the United States Constitution's separation of church and state.
