Erie Canal at junction of Oswego Canal in Syracuse, New York - 1900
|
The Erie Canal opened water transportation from the Hudson River in Albany, New York to Lake Erie in Buffalo, New York. Construction began with the first shovel of dirt dug at Rome, New York on July 4, 1817 and was completed on October 26, 1825. It was enlarged between 1836 and 1862 and replaced by the New York State Barge Canal in 1918. Recently portions of the old Erie Canal have been restored as town parks offering canoeing, hiking and bicycling.
