The Fort Garry Horse originated in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 15 April 1912, as the 34th Regiment of Cavalry. The following year it was re-designated the 34th Fort Garry Horse on 2 January 1913 and the Fort Garry Horse following the Great War on 15 March 1920.
