The U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of a national cemetery at Fredericksburg as a final resting place for Union soldiers who died in the Fredericksburg area during battle or from disease. Between 1866 and 1869, 15,243 Civil War dead were interred in the cemetery, and only 2,473 of these were identified. Graves were originally marked with wooden headboards. These were replaced with granite markers in 1874. This cemetery is part of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. It is not administered by the Veterans Administration.
