In 1843, there was a schism in the Church of Scotland over State and patron control in appointing ministers. The large group leaving in protest so they could appoint their own ministers formed the Free Church of Scotland. In 1900, the majority of the Free Church of Scotland merged with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland (1847–1900) (formed in 1847 by the union of the United Secession Church and the Relief Church) to form the United Free Church of Scotland, which in turn united with the Church of Scotland in 1929. A portion of the Free Church of Scotland did not merge in 1900 and continues to the present as the Free Church of Scotland.
