The historical county was located in Götaland and consisted of Bohuslän province, the western part of Västergötland province and small parts of Halland and Dalsland provinces. The county coat of arms were combined from the symbols of Bohuslän province and the one for the city of Gothenburg.

The county code for Gothenburg and Bohus county was the letter O (which is now the county code for Västra Götaland county as well) and there was about 119 parishes in the county.
