HMS Achilles was a Leander-class light-cruiser launched in 1932.
In 1937 Achilles was deployed on loan to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy as a replacement for the old Danae-class cruisers that were in NZ service. In 1939 she was a participant in the first naval battle of World War II: the Battle of the River Plate. With the formation of the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1941 Achilles was officially transferred to the new body as HMNZS Achilles. Achilles would go on to serve in the South Pacific for the majority of the War.
After the War (1948) Achilles was sold to the Royal Indian Navy and recommissioned as the HMIS Delhi.

In 1969 she visited New Zealand affording old crew members a nostalgic trip back to their youth.
INS Delhi was paid off in 1978. Her Y-turret was gifted to New Zealand and today stands at the entrance of the Devonport Naval Base (HMNZS Philomel) Auckland.
