The Bagrationi dynasty is one of the oldest ruling royal houses in the world, with a continuous descent from late antiquity. Its members have ruled over parts of both Georgia and Armenia for the last two millennia until their final deposition by Russia during the Russian annexation of Georgia in 1801. Subsequently, members of the family were accorded the rank of princes in Russia and elsewhere. Several branches, with competing claims to seniority, survive into the present day.
