The von Bruiningks descended from a family of merchants and pastors from Lübeck who settled in Narva in the seventeenth century. Axel Heinrich von Bruiningk was ennobled by Kaiser Karl VI, 14.viii.1737, and received Freiherrenstand from Kaiser Josef II at some point before 1774. Subsequently members of the family were matriculated in the livländischen, kurländischen, and oeselschen Ritterschaften.
