The house of Osten genannt Sacken descends from two Baltic-German noble families attested since the twelfth century. The first members of the family to use the combined surname were active in the sixteenth century and numerous branches subsequently flourished in the Baltic States, Pomerania, and Prussia. Several members of the family were advanced to the ranks of baron, count, and prince respectively.
