The family of Potocki h. Pilawa derive their name from the village of Potok Wielki and are attested from the fifteenth century. By the eighteenth century they were one of the richest and most powerful magnate families in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Several members of the family received the comital title in the Commonwealth and in Russia with numerous branches extant in the present day.
