The line of Sachsen-Hildburghausen were a branch of the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin. In the division of of the territory of Ernst I of Sachsen-Gotha und Altenburg, between his surviving sons in 1680, Ernst received Hildburghausen, becoming the first Herzog von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (Duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen). His descendants continued to rule in Hildburghausen until 1826 when a further division of the Ernestine territories resulted in the line of Sachsen-Hildburghausen exchanging Hildburghausen for Altenburg.
