The Stroganovs were a wealthy family of nobles and salt-mine owners in the north of Russia. Aleksandr, Nikolai, and Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov were elevated to the rank of baron in 1722 and Aleksandr Sergeevich Stroganov was elevated to the rank of count in 1761.
