- Historically, the name "Windsor" came about as a propaganda ploy to distract the public from German origins of the royal family. Europe was edging closer to war, and England was starting to feel the rumble of civil unrest. As such, it was arbitrarily chosen in response to the English citizenry's disapproval of being ruled by a foreign monarchy that spoke in a foreign tongue. So in the true style of early 20th century public relations, George V and his family took the name of Windsor castle to inject a national feel. At the time of this writing, it's still in use.
