Though I'm descended from one Hughey family, I'm also related to other Hughey families through other non-Hugney connections. From what I have learned to date there may be three totally unrelated Hughey families--the Scots, the Irish, and the German. I know there are Hughey families in Canada, the USA, and New Zealand today. As far as I know, the earliest Hughey ancestor of mine was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and allegedly (according to the Hughey book published in 1876) was drafted into the British Army to fight in the American Revolution. He was captured at the Battle of Cowpens and later escaped and made his way to Virginia and married and settled there.

I have to check the clan affiliation of the Scots Hughey family.

The legend of the Hughey family in Scotland was that it was created by the four surviving sons of the assassinated King of Mercia in Britannia. They fled to Scotland and formed the Hughey family. Hughey comes from a Brythonic word for "fire."
