Huntly, originally an area known by Māori as Rāhui Pōkeka, was given its name in 1870 by the district Postmaster and was named for a town in Scotland.
The Māori name Rāhui Pōkeka was in recognition of the plentiful tuna, or eel, in the surrounding waterways and the role Māori had in protecting that stock. Another version is that Rāhui Pōkeka denotes a place of rest where warriors could rest and practice the arts of war.
