This decoration was awarded by the Kingdom of Prussia begining in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars, then for the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and in 1914 for World War I. (For World War II is was awarded by Germany and is found at Iron Cross (Germany)
The Iron Cross was awarded in three grades:
- 2nd Class
- 1st Class
- Grand Cross of the Iron Cross
A person had to be a holder of the lower grade of the decoration before receiving the next level, so for the purpose of adding this decoration to individual profiles, only the highest level should be categorized.
