This is a subcategory for planters of Jamaica.

The term planter is synonymous in the Caribbean and Southern Colonies of America for farmer, but associated with the plants of cotton, sugar and tobacco instead of animals, hence the term plantations instead of farms or ranches.

Whilst used to describe the ruling classes of the plantation owners, following the end of slavery (and the seven year apprenticed labour period for British colonies), it can also refer to small-scale tenants who worked for themselves producing subsistence crops.
