This is part of a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the Kingman surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.
This portion of the study concerns those Kingmans whose origins can be traced back to Somerset. There are at least three branches of Kingmans from Somerset, they may have a common origin, but so far there is no evidence to prove or disprove this.
A possible common origin is the town of Frome, but only so far as the very late 1500s. The Frome parish records are complete back to the mid 1500s and the first mention of a Kingman in them is the baptism of Henry son of Henry Kingman in 1607. Where Henry senior came from has not been determined.
There is a y-DNA project dedicated to the Kingman surname, details of which can be found on the Kin(g)(s)man Family website
