This category is part of the Kingsmill Name Study, the Kingsmore Name Study and the Kingsman Name Study. Please contact the project leader for more information.
This is part of a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the Kingsman surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.
The earliest fully referenced person in this group is ROBERT KINGSMAN (c1811-1879). Census data on him consistently states that he came from Ireland, and his death registration records his parents as William Kingsman and Jane Pettigrew. There is one instance (1851 census) where his surname is shown as KINGSMILL rather than KINGSMAN. He also had a daughter (Sarah) who died an infant and was recorded with the surname KINGSMILL.
y-DNA evidence shows that the surname originally was Kingsmill and this line links back somehow to the Kingsmill family of Kent, England. There are also matches to Kingsmore families who have traced their roots back to Ireland.
There is a y-DNA project dedicated to the Kingsman surname and now including these Kingsmill and Kingsmore links, details of which can be found on the Kin(g)(s)man Family website. We also have a growing autosomal project for anyone who is descended from this Irish branch of the Kingsmill family.
