John Kinman first appears in the written records in 1756 as a resident of Montgomery Co., PA. He is possibly the son of a William Kinman who married Margaret Williams in Philadelphia County in 1725, and either brother or cousin of Thomas Kinman whose birth was recorded in 1732 in Montgomery County. Family lore has it that his family originated in Scotland, and there was a contemporary family of the same name in Perthshire who unfortunately appear to have no living Kinman descendants in the UK. The descendants of Thomas and John in the USA are numerous.
There is a y-DNA project dedicated to the Kinman surname, details of which can be found on the Kin(g)(s)man Family website
