The family of Kinnesman held the Manor of Loddington for several hundred years. They were entitled to bear arms and feature in the Herald's Visitations. There are many branches descending from this Northamptonshire root, at least one of which has direct male line descendants living in the 21st century. This has provided a marker for the DNA for this family, but only one so far - more donors would be most welcome.
Details of the y-DNA project dedicated to the Kinsman surname can be found on the Kin(g)(s)man Family website.
The name derivation is unlikely to be anything as trite as being someone's relative, otherwise the surname would be widespread with multiple origins. One possibility is that they were originally "Keynesman", William de Keynes being Sheriff of Northampton in 1086.
