New Hampshire was admitted to the union on June 21, 1788 as the 9th state to ratify the Constitution, bringing that document into effect. The state was named after the southern English county of Hampshire. New Hampshire is the 5th smallest, and the 9th least populous of the 50 United States. Concord is the state capital, while Manchester is the largest city in the state. New Hampshire is part of the US region of New England.
