New Jewish Cemetery (Latvian: Rīgas Jaunie Ebreju kapi) is also known as Shmerli Cemetery (Latvian: Šmerli kapi). The request to establish a new cemetery was submitted to city of Riga by Jewish burial society "Hevra Kadis" in summer of 1923.
The area of the cemetery is 93,000 square meters (1 million sq/ft); the number of graves is approximately 22,500.
Mikhail Tal is buried at this cemetery. He was a Soviet Latvian chess Grandmaster and the eighth World Chess Champion.
