"Benjamin Eastman was at Fort Ann, New York about 1790 and Alvin at Rodman about 1800. Eli Eastman settled in Adams, New York about 1810 and was credited with being its first settled physician. Samuel Eastman, at Hopkinton, in 1808; Frederick, an original settler at Orwell in 1806; Jeremiah, in Broome County in 1816; and Peter Eastman in Milo, New York in 1818 were other New York state pioneers. But perhaps the most interesting town in the state from an Eastman standpoint if Marshall. Here Joseph Eastman (1756) settled about 1784 buying land from the government at fifty cents an acre. A family burying ground, taken from the original tract, contains the remains of Joseph and members of his family. Other Eastmans in Marshall included Harvey (1777) the grandfather of George Eastman of Kodak fame. Of the eight Eastman families in New York state in 1790, three were in Washington County and were brothers: Hezekiah, Joseph, and Nathaniel. Four Eastmans were in New York City in 1835: Jacob C., Ornan, Levi and Samuel."[1]
