This cemetery is on a headland, Cape Horn, in the Ngunguru River, and it not accessible by road. When the cemetery was in use, the coffins came by boat and were carried up the hillside along a track cut through the bush. To reach the cemetery now, turn into Tongatu Road, some 20kms from Whangarei and 2km from Ngunguru, and walk along the foreshore at low tide. Mrs Anne Mary Brown (née Webster) bequeathed the land for the cemetery in the 1890’s and the last burial was in 1934. The cemetery was officially closed in August 1981.
