NAME
- Nisbet is the main spelling preference in Scotland.
- Nesbit, which is often the spelling in England.
- Nisbett some of those moving from Scotland to England had added an extra T which they believed designated a higher social standing.
- Nesbitt is most often the spelling in Northern Ireland of so called Ulster Scots
ORIGIN Supposedly from the Northern Middle English "nese", nose plus either the Old English pre 7th Century word "bita" meaning mouthful, or piece of ground, or "byht", a bend (in a river). The place names could therefore mean either a piece of raised land shaped like a nose, or a bend in a river shaped like a nose. The surname probably also arose independently from numerous Scottish and Northern English location named Nesbit(t)/Nisbet(t).
