Established In May 1873, the Parliament of Canada sent 150 recruits west to Manitoba, Originally called the North West Mounted Rifles, it gradually acquired the name "North-West Mounted Police" (NWMP) to appease American fears of an armed unit on it's northern border. The mounted police combined military, police and judicial functions.

Over the next few years, the police extended Canadian law across the region, establishing good working relationships with the First Nations and discouraging American incursions (whisky traders and United States military). The officers established several posts throughout the west such as Fort Macleod, Fort Edmonton and Fort Calgary in Alberta; Fort Pelly and Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan. They assisted in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

In 1904, King Edward VII conferred the title of "Royal" upon the North-West Mounted Police. In 1919, the Royal North-West Mounted Police was merged with the Dominion Police, a federal police force with jurisdiction in eastern Canada, taking effect under the name the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on February 1, 1920. For events after February 1, 1920, see Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
