The evidence suggests that Northern Bay was not settled with permanent families until the end of the 18th century possibly because Carbonear merchants such as Valentine and Kemp, controlled the bay. At least two of these merchants from Carbonear used Northern Bay as a fishing station beginning in the mid 1700s and kept a caretaker there in the Winter.

  • John Fletcher may have been a settler or a winter caretaker who appears in the Colonial Office Secretary Book for 21 Oct 1757 when Gov Edwards ordered John Fletcher of Northern Bay, Conception Bay to pay the wages of John McGrath. See: Colonial Office Secretary Book for 21 Oct 1757 entry 409. However by 1805, the name Fletcher does not appear later in the Plantation Book.
  • Thomas Smith of Northern Bay had a son, William, baptised in Sept 1771 in St. John's

Late 18th families who settled in Northern Bay: When people began to settle permanently in Northern Bay, most came from other communities on Conception or Trinity Bays. At the end of the 18th century, there were several people fishing and possibly living in Northern Bay but were not included in the 1805 the Plantation Book.

  • Puddesters: Folk history suggests that Puddester is an anglisation of the Jersey, Channel Island name Poingdestra. The first documented Poingdestra is Henry who owned property in Western Bay. He sold a parcels in 1770 and another in 1786 according the the 1805 Colonial Office record of property, Vol 13 call the Plantation Book. link In 1798 Clement Poingdestra and Co inherited another parcel in Western Bay from their father: likely Henry. There were no buildings on the property in Western Bay and the family may have already been living in Northern Bay before 1800.
