The Northwest Territory encompasses those lands north of the Ohio River ceded to the United States by Great Britain under the Treaty of Paris (1783). Organized as a territory under the Articles of Confederation by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and re-affirmed in 1789 by the First Congress under the Constitution. This served as the basis and precedent for future territorial acquisition, organization, and admittance to statehood.
