Norway is located on the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula and has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden and is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east. The remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard also form part of Norway.

  • Norway is commonly divided into five major geographical regions (landsdeler) - Northern Norway (Nord-Norge/Nord-Noreg), Central Norway (Trøndelag, alt. Midt-Norge/Midt-Noreg), Western Norway (Vestlandet), Southern Norway (Sørlandet or Agder) and Eastern Norway (Østlandet/Austlandet).
  • Norway has also historically been divided into a number of districts or provinces (landskap). They have deep historical roots but only partially coincide with today's administrative units of counties and municipalities.
  • The modern-day counties, called fylke, of Norway are sub-national, geographical areas between the state and the municipalities. Norway's counties were established in 1919 as a continuation of the former counties called amt, but with mostly new names. There were 20 counties until 1972, 19 counties until 2018, 18 counties until 2020, and from 1 January 2020, Norway is divided into eleven counties.
  • The historical counties, called amt, were in use from 1662 to 1919.
  • Before the counties/amt there was len and syssel. For more info; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syssel
  • The (old) parishes (prestegjeld) of Norway may be considered the basic unit of genealogy in Norway. It was both a geographic and administrative area within the Church of Norway. Prestegjelds began in the 1400s and were officially discontinued in 2012
