Palmerston's Folly was the name given to the enormously costly work undertaken by the Government to defend the dockyards of the Royal Navy undertaken after the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom report of 1860 occasioned by yet another invasion scare. The work was duly completed but the French never came.
