The Danish term "sogn" represents a geographical area with a common church which has been translated as "parish". In 2014, Denmark consisted of about 2.200 parishes, then there are historical parishes as well to be considered when doing genealogy.
Many Danish parishes originated in the Middle Ages, and their geographical boundaries were rarely changed. With a few exceptions, until the municipal reform in 1970, the parishes in the countryside also constituted an independent municipality (parish municipality), although many municipalities consisted of 2 or 3 parishes.
