Le nom de Portneuf (parfois écrit Port-Neuf) fut d'abord donné à la seigneurie de Portneuf qui fut concédée en 1636, puis à peu près en même temps à la rivière et à l'établissement situé à son embouchure. Les premiers habitants s'y installèrent vers 1640. Désservi par voie de mission par les curés de Sainte-Famille-du-Cap-Santé.

The name of Portneuf (sometimes written Port-Neuf) was first given to the seigneury of Portneuf which was granted in 1636, then more or less simultaneously to the river and to the establishment located at its mouth. The first inhabitants settled there around 1640. Served by way of mission by the priests of Sainte-Famille-du-Cap-Santé.
