A Wiper usually worked in a roundhouse, where he helped to maintain the locomotives by packing and removing oily waste rags into the moving engine parts of the locomotive. This helped to keep the engine parts lubricated and clean from rust. This was the lowest job, at an entry level, associated with locomotive engines.
