The Republic of Texas was a sovereign state in North America that existed from March 2, 1836, to February 19, 1846. On March 2, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed by 58 delegates and the Republic of Texas was declared, but Mexico refused to recognize the independence of the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between the two states continued into the 1840s. On December 29, 1845, the United States of America annexed the Republic of Texas as the 28th State; however, power was not transferred from the Republic to the State until February 19, 1846 - creating an overlap in the timelines of the Republic and Statehood.
