Flag Officers in the Royal Australian Navy carry the rank of (in descending order):
- Admiral of the Fleet – the late HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, prince-consort to the Queen of Australia, Elizabeth II, was appointed Admiral of the Fleet in a ceremonial and honorary capacity.
- Admiral – four star equivalent; when an RAN Flag Officer is appointed Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), he or she is promoted Admiral.
- Vice Admiral – a three-star rank and the highest permanent rank in the Royal Australian Navy, held by the Chief of Navy; also held when a RAN officer is appointed as Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Chief of Joint Operations or Chief of Joint Capabilities.
