The first ship to be fitted with refrigeration machinery, the SS Bavarian was built at at Dumbarton, Scotland by William Denny & Co. for the Allan Line. She was launched 11 May 1899, arriving at Liverpool 17 Aug 1899. After her first Atlantic crossing, she was charted to serve as Boer War transport #16. In that capacity, she traveled between England, South Africa, and India before resuming regular Atlantic passenger service in October 1902.

The Bavarian was wrecked on Wye Rock off Montreal 3 Nov 1905.
