The Salvation Army is a Protestant Christian church which grew out of the 19th Century Holiness Movement. It is best known for its international charitable work. Its theology is based on Wesleyan-Arminian Methodism although it does not celebrate the rites of baptism or Holy Communion. Its members are called soldiers, it churches are called Corps or Citadels, and its clergy are given military titles such as Major or General. Its primary mission is to bring salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their "physical and spiritual needs".
