Schoharie County was created by joining portions of Otsego and Albany counties in 1795. The name of the county and the county seat come from a Mohawk language meaning "floating driftwood." The county seat is Schoharie. Schoharie County is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
