The Shaw Regiment Union Veterans, Union, Department of the Potomac is about twelve years old. It is the only colored organization of its kind in the department and its area includes the District of Columbia and State of Maryland. It is named in honor of the gallant Robert Gould Shaw who lost his life while leading the brave 54th Massachusetts at Fort Wagner. To be a full member one must have been a regularly enlisted man and have participated in at least one engagement. Sons of veterans are eligible to appointive offices only and have no vote.
