The Estonians are first mentioned around the year 800 and already seem to have been associated with Scandinavia during the Viking Age.
The area has been ruled by both Germans and Danes before 1561 when it is considered to be subject to Sweden. After the Great Nordic War, Estonia became part of Russia, officially at the Peace of Nystad in 1721. In 1991, Estonia became an independent country, the Republic of Estonia.
Under Swedish rule, the following landskap seem to have existed in northern Estonia, Harju / Harrien / Harjumaa, Järva , Lääne and Viru. Southern Estonia seems to have belonged to Poland 1582-1625 and consisted of Pärnu and Tartu, the island of Saaremaa belonged to Denmark until 1645.
While this concerns the geographical area, there has been "Swedish Estonians" or Estlandssvenskar, a Swedish-speaking language minority, living in some of these areas until most of them fled to Sweden fled to Sweden during World War II.
