  • 1851 - Isaac Singer is granted a patent for his sewing machine.
  • 1853 - Valley Falls train collision killed 14 and seriously injured 17 after two passenger trains collided. This accident established the double track system, railroad signaling instead of timed arrivals and departures, and spurred the creation of the first time zones in the U.S.
  • 1898 - Spanish-American War ends.
