- 1870 - Thomas Henry Peterson (1824-1904) was the first African-American to vote under the 15th Amendment.
- 1889 - Created by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France is inaugurated.
- 1933 - The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is founded in the U.S. to help put people back to work on public works projects.
- 1949 - Newfoundland joins the Canadian Federation and becomes the 10th Province of Canada.
- 1959 - The 14th Dalai Lama crossed the border into India and was granted political asylum.
- 1966 - The Soviet Union launched Luna 10 which was the first space probe to orbit the Moon.

- 1596 - René Descartes (1596-1650), French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. He is considered as one of the founders of modern philosophy.
- 1848 - William Waldorf Astor, American attorney, politician, businessman, newspaper publisher, and philanthropist. He built the Waldorf Hotel in NYC in 1890 which later became part of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in 1897.
- 1927 - Cesar Chevez, American Labor Leader and Civil Rights Activist. The State of California celebrates the Cesar Chavez Day holiday on his birthday, March 31.
- 1928 - Gordie Howe, professional ice hockey player. Known as Mr. Hockey in Canada. He played for 32 seasons.
- 1934 - Shirley Jones, American singer and actress.
- 1943 - Christopher Walken, American actor.
- 1948 - Al Gore, Jr., Vice President of the US (1993-2001), and founder of The Alliance for Climate Protection for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
- 1953 - Deborah Williams, beloved educator in Fresno County, California. A school was dedicated with her name after her passing.

- 1809 - Franz Joseph Haydn, Austrian classical composer.
- 1911 - Otto Ringling, one of the five Ringling Brothers of circus fame.
- 1957 - Gene Lockhart, Canadian-American actor.
- 1995 - Selena, Mexican-American Queen of Tejano singer, actress, and fashion designer.
- 1997 - Helen Eugenie Moore Anderson was the first woman Ambassador Chief of Staff in U.S. history.
- 2008 - Jules Dassin, American director, screenwriter, producer and actor.
- 2016 - Zaha Mohammed Hadid, British prize-winning architect.
