This category contains profiles of persons associated with the Titchfield Canal.
Since very early times trading had been conducted on the River Meon carrying goods inland to the settlement of Titchfield contributing to the prosperity of the town.
By 1611 the river was silting up seriously. Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, decided that the river should be canalised to protect trade.
Later the outlet of the canal to the sea was walled up effectively ending the water borne trade and the waters of the river trickle out through the marsh to the sea. The marsh is now the Titchfield Haven Nature Reserve and the tiny harbour is home to small yachts.
