Landing level category for profiles of persons of twin birth.

There are three types of twins:

  • Identical (Monozygotic) means that the zygote (fertilized egg) formed two separate embryos. Conjoined twins are identical twins with an incomplete separation of cells.
  • Semi-Identical (Sesquizygotic) is where two sperm fertilize one egg. The fertilized egg then splits in two. So, semi-identical twins share all the same chromosomes from their birthing parent (mother), but only 50 percent from their non-birthing parent (father). Semi-identical twins have only recently been discovered and there are so far only two known cases.
  • Fraternal (Dizygotic) means that more than one egg was fertilized. This is typical when fertility drugs were used; but it often occurs naturally as well. Because these twins share a completely different set of chromosomes from both their mother and father, they are genetically just like singleton siblings that just happen to be born at the same time. Twins of different genders are almost always fraternal twins (there are a few sets of different gender identical twins - this is caused by a genetic mutation and is extremely rare).

Fun Fact: Only 1/3 of all twins in the world are identical twins. Fraternal twins make up 2/3 of all twin births.
