The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a sovereign state that has only officially existed since 1927, while the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland only came into being in 1801, some twenty five years after the American Declaration of Independence on 04 July 1776.

Most of Ireland left the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on 6 December 1922 and on 12 April 1927, the remainder officially changed its name to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It is known colloquially as the United Kingdom or Great Britain and the former includes England, Wales, Scotland, the northeastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands.

Wales was annexed by England and incorporated within the English legal system under the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542.

England and Scotland had been in personal union under the House of Stuart since 24 March 1603 when on 1 May 1707, the Kingdom of Scotland merged with the Kingdom of England to become the Kingdom of Great Britain.

On 1 January 1801, the Kingdom of Great Britain merged with the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union with Great Britain) to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The Kingdom of Hanover was also in personal union with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from its creation on 12 October 1814 until 20 June 1837, when Queen Victoria succeeded as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and her uncle Ernest Augustus I succeeded as King of Hanover.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland currently consists of four constituent parts:

Jurisdictions

Three jurisdictions hold the status of British Crown Dependency. These are the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey, known as the Channel Islands, in the English Channel, and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.
